Character Line-Up Jan 2008

Show & Tell 7th December 2007

This week has been good, finally transferring 2D or theory into 3D.

Updation

My last post was some time ago. Many things have changed since then and i never got around to filming an example of a seamless transition.

What have I been doing for the last however long it has been? I studied alot of literature on a wide varity of subjects, from cognitive psychology to spline mathematics.

After this massive study I continued to develop something called a SRAS, which, when it comes down to it, is a docuement containing what the demo i am constructing to prove/disprove my thesis requires in it.

Once the SRAS was finished a Technical Design Document was written, outlining how the things described in the SRAS would be implemented in code. For anyone wanting to know, the majority of my code is constructed with free third-party libraries:

- Ogre3D (Object-orientated Graphical Rendering Engine)
- FMOD Ex Sound System
- OIS (Object-orientated Input System)

I finished my Technical Design Document on Thursday, so thats pretty much caught up to date.

I’m nearly finished working on Spline math (makes cameras move smoothly). After that i can let my focus be solely on designing the seamless transitions to work with the framework I have set out. =)

Hey a little about me.

Well as for my background I am a Taranaki guy that grew up on a dairy farm, I have put in a few years aspiring towards following the family tradition of milking cows for a living but decided I still have a number of years up my sleeves to do what I feel like before I need to settle into a life long career.  So instead of milking cows I decided to follow a dream of creating computer games.  After some time spent at Uni and at Media Design school I have found myself in the opportune position of designing a sound engine for Kingi at Ignite studios.

Immersion?

Jonathan and I have bee questioning the elements in games that lead to immersion. Camera angles, transition types, methods, music, sound.  This has also led us to study filmography or the art of making films.

We’ll keep you posted on this….

Welcome!

Hey, this is Jonathan.

I’m currently doing the Graduate Diploma of Creative Technologies at M.D.S. in combination with Ignite Studios.

This post will contain what I’m actually doing in this course, as many have no idea, and those that i have told have no understanding.

Alright, so basically what this qualification comes down to is being able to research relevant, yet to be identified technologies and ideas that relate to a specific field, in my case; video game development. This is all done under the supervision of an industry mentor, in our case, Kingi Gilbert and by the end of the research a prototype should be made that A: demonstrates the research undertaken and B: Follows guidelines set by the industry.

So thats the qualification.. doesn’t really tell you much though.

What I’m really doing is researching how to seamlessly change between two perspectives. In relevance to gaming, this is most prominently a transition between first-person perspective when someone is in interactive play and when there is a third-person, pre-scripted cut-scene. I believe that this will keep a continuation of immersion in games that require such immersion, which has not been there in the past.

If you have no idea what i mean by the above paragraph, don’t fret. Next post will contain an example in the form of a filmed scenario!

Social Networking & Video Games

Looking ahead to the future, I’m interested in the movement of social networks and game structures. Rather than develop new social networking sites I think a cool approach could be to encourage social network operators (Bebo, MySpace) to develop APIs for Game Developers to tap into. Either that or we do them ourselves
